Waimea Middle School will receive $5 million for a new building after Gov. Neil Abercrombie announced Thursday the release of a total of $87.1 million for public school improvements.
The eight-classroom building will include support and specialty spaces, science classrooms and labs, computer labs, a faculty center, teacher planning spaces, a conference room and offices.
The release included $36.4 million for general maintenance and improvements at schools across the state, which would reduce the school system’s backlog for repair and maintenance to $265 million.
The total funds would also include $15 million for program support at various schools, $15 million for equity projects, and $11 million to address capacity issues.
“In addition to investing in our educational infrastructure and the welfare of our keiki, these projects will create jobs in our growing construction industry,” Abercrombie was quoted as saying via a press release. “This is a wise investment of state funds.”
