In conjunction with the gallery opening of Akihiko Izukura’s designer art and fashionable attire show at Hawaii Museum of Contemporary Art at 141 Kalakaua St. in Hilo, at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 2, Izukura will present to the community of Hilo hands-on techniques used in creating wearable designer and fashionable clothing for women from silkworms.
Izukura will hold several workshops throughout his exhibition, such as “Reeling Spinning,” 10 a.m. to noon on May 3; “Reeling (large objects)” 1 to 5 p.m. on May 3; “Natural Dyeing (art object)” from 10 a.m. to noon on May 17; “Netting Scarves” from 1 to 5 p.m. on May 17; “Braiding Scarves” from 10 a.m. to noon on May 24, and “Introduction to Senshoku-Doon” from 1 to 5 p.m. on May 24. The artist from Kyoto, Japan, also will present his first fashion show — twice — at 5:30 p.m. on May 3 and on May 17, both at 141 Kalakaua St. During Izukura’s exhibit you may find and purchase finely crafted scarves, clothing and wearable art at the “trunk show” during Izukura’s gallery exhibition May 3-28.
