The Big Island Chess Club invites the community to join in its new Saturday morning teaching and playing sessions at the Hilo Public Library.
Coordinated by chess club founder Jim W. Lee, assisted by Marsha Pauline of the Hilo Friends Group, the program was launched March 15 in cooperation with the library
Folks of all ages may stop by the Children’s Room from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. any Saturday and join in the fun learning opportunity.
“Our ranked USCF coach, Jon Neet; a chess master, Burt Izumikawa, who is ranked USCF &FIDE (World Chess Organization); and others will be providing assistance every Saturday to those who want to learn or just to be a better chess player — all provided free of charge,” Lee said.
At the grand opening in March, 30 new members signed up, and kids and adults of all ages had lots of fun, Lee said.
“We invite all ages — young to senior — to learn, play and have fun in one of the world’s most intelligent games called chess, which has been played around the world for over 2,000 years now,” he said.
BICC has two main goals: To help club members prepare for local and statewide chess tournaments, and to get chess included in the state Department of Education curriculum.
“Come in and join us, it’s all free to get smarter,” Lee said.
