Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui announced Wednesday that Waiakea Intermediate School will receive $45,000 to expand its after-school program.
The school is one of five intermediate schools in the state, and the only on the Big Island, selected to participate in the REACH program.
The program stands for Resources for Enrichment, Athletics, Culture and Health.
Tsutsui made the announcement to Waiakea students in the school’s cafeteria.
The school can use the money, he said, to add after-school activities, such as robotics, hydroponics, hula and others.
“What we want to do is provide opportunities to all of you so you can have exciting things to do after school,” Tsutsui told the students.
He said he will request $3 million from the state Legislature next session to expand the program to other schools.
Donations will also be used to fund the program.
Waiakea’s after-school program serves about 120 students a day.
