The 25th annual Domestic Violence Family Peace Walk and Vigil will be held on Friday, Oct. 25, in Hilo. At 4 p.m., there will be sign waving along Kamehameha Avenue near the King Kamehameha Statue. At 4:20 p.m., the Family Peace Walk will start and go along Kamehameha Avenue, up Pauahi Street, around the Hale Kaulike Court House and end at the Aupuni Center.
For those who prefer not to walk, other participants will be sign-waving along Kilauea Avenue and Pauahi Streets during this time. The vigil will start at 5:15 p.m. at Aupuni Center with the lighting-of-the-candle ceremony and the 2013 Purple Ribbon Recognitions to those who have dedicated their time and support to victims of domestic violence: Star Newland, Kat Konanui, Rose Bautista and Heritage Christian Church.
The public is encouraged to attend. This event unites the community to recognize those who lost their lives due to domestic violence and to raise community awareness and advocacy during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Congress has designated October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month since 1989. A quilt created in memory of those who have lost their lives to domestic violence will be on display at the Prince Kuhio Plaza through Oct. 18.
