Fifty years ago the first Merrie Monarch celebration began, and the Hilo Shopping Center had just been constructed the year before. This first shopping center on the entire Island of Hawaii was built after the devastating 1960 tsunami.
The sidewalk sales of the original merchants provided a basis for the current craft fairs of today. In this tradition, the annual HSC Merrie Monarch Craft Fair is set for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, April 3-5.
“Again this year, we will have local crafters both inside the air-conditioned mall and outside on the covered sidewalk,” said fair coordinator Marcia Prose.
The fair opens at 9 a.m. all three days, closing at 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
“Our annual Craft Fair celebrating Merrie Monarch is again presented with a kamaaina theme,” said Prose. “All our vendors are local, your neighbors and friends.
Craft fair shopping with us is like visiting your family where you’ll find your favorite aunties and tutus.”
Offered for sale will be many sewn items such as kitchen towels, aprons, futons, bags, baby items and lots more!
The public is invited and there is no admission fee to the fair.
