The Department of Public Works’ Traffic Division announced it is continuing to convert streetlights from the current low-pressure sodium lamps to light-emitting diode lamps (LED) this week.
The plan is to install 20 LEDs per intersection near traffic signals along Kinoole Street from Waianuenue to Haihai. With minimal traffic disruption and weather permitting, this work could take about a month. Through Sunday, special off-duty police officers will redirect traffic during intermittent lane closures along Kinoole Street in downtown Hilo from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., beginning at the Waianuenue Street intersection.
The Traffic Division ordered 1,000 lamps using $500,000 received from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. It will take Public Works a year to convert the streetlights to LED around the island. This summer, 90 streetlights in Waimea were converted to LED.
