Waiakea graduate Kadara Marshall capped an eventful first season of track and field at Dickinson State, finishing 19th Friday in the triple jump at the NAIA outdoor track and field national championships in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Marshall twice reached 35 feet, 7 3/4 inches, which is almost two feet shorter than the distance she jumped as senior with the Warriors in winning state gold in 2016.
At the North Star Athletic Association finals earlier in the month, Marshall claimed silver in the long jump, 17-04.75, and took fourth in the triple as the Blue Hawks claimed their second conference title in a row.
At the indoor championships in March in Kansas, Marshall finished 16th in the triple jump at 37-00.50.
Marshall arrived in Dickinson, South Dakota, after playing two years of volleyball at Western Nebraska Junior College, where she was a two-time Academic All-Region award recipient.
“I chose (Dickinson) because the sense of community that I felt when I went to visit and how welcoming everyone was meant a lot to me,” Marshall said in a release. “Being able to dual sport with my two favorite sports was an opportunity that I just would not be able to pass up.”
Marshall was a three-sport standout at Waiakea, also playing soccer.
Here is a look at how some other Big Island graduates fared during the spring season.
• Boston College sophomore Emma Taylor (Hawaii Prep, 2016) failed to advance out of the preliminary in either hurdling event at the ACC championships. In the 100 meters, Taylor was 26th after finishing in 15.23 seconds. She was 19th in the 400 (1:01.79).
Octavio clicks in Kentucky
Waiakea graduate Gehrig Octavio enjoyed a successful first season at Murray State College in Kentucky, batting .376 for the junior college with five home runs, 29 RBIs and 18 steals as an outfielder.
Octavio also played soccer and football at Waiakea.
• Kamehameha graduate Kobi Candaroma led Mount Mercy (Iowa) with a .330 batting average.
The junior outfielder – the 2015 BIIF Division II Player of the Year – started his career at the University of Hawaii, scoring five runs a pinch-runner and making one start in 2016.
Candaroma hit two home runs for the Mustangs this season 22 RBIs, 11 steals and a .439 on-base percentage.
Also playing for the NAIA school is Hilo graduate Chase Ishii. The freshman catcher played in eight games and was five for 10 at the plate.
