Hawaii County invites the public to sign condolence books to honor the late U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Akaka.
Condolence books are now available for signing at the reception desks of the mayor’s offices in Hilo and Kona during regular office hours. The books will be given to the senator’s family.
Akaka, who represented Hawaii in Washington for more than 35 years, died April 6 at the age of 93.
“Senator Akaka was a very great man, who really had aloha for everyone,” said Mayor Harry Kim. “We honor his memory and are grateful for his devoted service to the people of Hawaii.”
Akaka’s memorial service events will take place May 18-21 in Honolulu. The senator will lay in state at the Capitol rotunda from 10 a.m. May 18 to 10 a.m. May 19. A celebration of life service will take place May 19 at Kawaiaha‘o Church in Honolulu with visitation beginning at noon followed by a 2 p.m. service that is open to the public.
A private burial service for the family will take place May 21 at the National Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.
