Dwight Mitsuyoshi Sumida, 71, of Hilo died Dec. 14 at The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu. Born in Pahala, he was a retired associate professor of animal science for the University of Hawaii at Hawaii Community College, former assistant coach to Jimmy Yagi for the University of Hawaii at Hilo Vulcans men’s basketball team and member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and Anela Nani Subdivision Kumiai. Visitation 2-4 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 7) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Memorial service at 4 p.m. Casual attire, no flowers. Survived by wife, Elaine Sumida of Hilo; son, Derek (Jennifer) Sumida of New York; daughter, Carie Sumida of New York; brothers, Roy (Marilyn) Sumida of California and Cyrus (Myra) Sumida of Pahala; sister-in-law, Audrey Sumida of Kaneohe, Oahu; brothers-in-law, Larry (Hattie) Kanda of Pearl City, Oahu, and Walter (Beverly) Kanda of Honokaa; two grandchildren; aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.
