Giant calligraphy

Koki Takehara, a professional Japanese calligraphy artist, uses a 60-pound brush to draw the character “Kizuna,” which represents bonds or connections between people, on Sunday during the annual Bodhi Day service at Sangha Hall in Hilo. The event was sponsored by the Big Island Buddhist Federation and hosted by Taishoji Soto Mission. Playing drums is Chad Nakagawa of Taishoji Taiko.

Makeshift checkpoint erected near beach park

Wayson Ioane was tired of people driving into the area near Lehia Beach Park at the end of Kalanianaole Avenue to take drugs. So he and several others who live down the Kapoho Coast Road put up a makeshift roadblock Friday at the start of the unpaved path, near the former Puumaile Hospital, to keep them out.
