Portions of Manono Street and Leilani Street in Hilo will be closed to traffic until late March as the county Department of Public Works continues a road reconstruction project.
Grading and pavement work began Monday and is expected to continue until March 24.
Manono will be closed between Kekuanaoa Street and East Lanikaula Street. Leilani will be closed between Mililani Street and Hinano Street.
Mililani and Hinano will be available as alternate routes, according to the DPW.
The Manono Street project began last October and is expected to be complete by May. Once finished, it will address drainage issues in the area, as well as improve safety for bicyclists and pedestrians.
Barett Otani, public works information and education specialist, said in an email that driveway and sidewalk connections will still need to be complete after the March closures, along with utility adjustments and road-striping.
Otani said the improvements remain on budget, with a total cost of $5,075,546 in county capital improvement funds and federal aid. Loeffler Construction Inc., was awarded the contract.
The department’s reconstruction of Komohana Street is also expected to be finished by May. That work, contracted to Yamada and Sons Inc., began in January and is approximately 30 percent complete. It has a budget of $4.9 million.
The dry winter has helped with the construction timeline for both projects, Otani said, but neither will be complete sooner than expected.
