KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Preparatory Academy girls volleyball ended its regular-season slate in the most dominant fashion possible.
Thanks to strong play on both sides of the net, Ka Makani handled Makua Lani Christian Academy in straight sets on Tuesday night at Old Kona Airport — 25-9, 25-10 and 25-9.
It was HPA’s fifth consecutive win, ending the season 10-4 overall before playoffs begin later this week. In 2025, the red and white have beaten the likes of Kealakehe, Kanu o ka ‘Aina, Honoka‘a, Kohala and Makua Lani.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Ka Makani’s seeding and first-round opponent are yet to be decided. Nonetheless, the team has impressed in 2025, even after going through a rebuilding phase from a year ago. Being a veteran-heavy squad over the last couple of years, HPA has just two seniors on this year’s team. The group’s young talent has translated to the court, making them one of the most formidable teams on the island.
“(This) was our last game of the regular season, and we are excited to go into the playoffs this weekend,” Ka Makani head coach Daena Craven told the paper postgame. “Our girls have been working hard, and look forward to the challenges ahead.”
HPA junior Chloe Willman led the charge for the winners on both ends, using her towering length to deny the Lady Lions’ kill attempts at the net and smacking powerful spikes to the middle of the floor. Her play often overwhelmed Makua Lani, which helped give Ka Makani comfortable leads in each set.
Willman’s teammates — junior Kela Quayle and sophomore Kaiulani Honda — also helped out with their attacking and denial defense at the net.
The rest of the red and white’s roster consists of seniors Madie Buczyna and Lehia Akau, juniors Frida Coulon, Malia Pettitm Noana Motyka and Keilana Hunt and sophomores Reece Lustik and Zetta Freitas.
Makua Lani fought hard to keep rallies alive, but did not have enough firepower or depth to finish off sets. The Lady Lions would consistently have just one player on their bench, while HPA could afford to rest more girls with their deeper roster.
The Lady Lions’ roster consists of seniors Emery Baker, Kayla Lagang and Taveea Lincoln-Smith, junior Riley Lambert, sophomores Josie Baker, Shayla Biven and Chloe Texeira and freshmen Evie Lehman and Tia Marshall.
Tuesday was additionally Makua Lani’s last regular season match, and celebrated its three seniors with a postgame ceremony. The Lady Lions ended their season 0-13.
