The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) girls volleyball season concluded its final weekend of the regular season slate across the island. Matches will wrap up this week before playoffs begin Friday night. See the paper later this week for finalized standings and the playoff matchups. The playoffs will open with an east vs. west format.
Hilo 3, Ka‘u 2
Hilo girls volleyball beat DII powerhouse Ka‘u in a hard-fought, five-set match Saturday at home. The Vikings moved to 12-1 — good enough to stay a half-game ahead of Konawaena in second place in BIIF DI at 12-1.
The Trojans won the first two sets 25-22 and 27-25, but Hilo adjusted and won the remaining three frames — 25-7, 25-18 and 15-13.
While both schools are positioned to have strong playoff seedings, the Vikings have three regular season matches remaining — tonight at 5 p.m. at Ka Umeke, Tuesday night against Waiakea at home and Thursday against Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i in Hilo. Ka‘u (9-5) still remains firmly in the third-place spot of BIIF DII, and will next play the Daggers tonight in Pahoa town. The Trojans will then conclude their regular season with a Wednesday night match against KS-Hawai‘i at home.
Konawaena 3,
Honoka‘a 0
Konawaena girls volleyball stayed in third place in BIIF Division I after a straight-sets victory over the Dragons on Friday night in Honoka‘a town. The Wildcats moved to 12-2.
Kona won by scores of 25-14, 25-11 and 25-17. It was the second time the Wildcats beat the Dragons in straight sets this season.
The Wildcats will return to action tonight against local rival Ehunui at Kona Old Airport’s gymnasium. Honoka‘a (7-8), still fighting for a playoff spot, will next play Kohala on Tuesday night in Kapa‘au.
HPA 3, MLCA 0
Hawaii Preparatory Academy girls volleyball remained in the No. 1 spot in BIIF II with a straight-sets win over Makua Lani Christian Academy on Friday night inside Kamuela’s Castle Gymnasium.
Ka Makani won by scores of 25-5, 25-7 and 25-10. It was the red and white’s ninth consecutive win. HPA will conclude its regular season slate by traveling south to Kealakekua to face Konawaena on Wednesday night inside Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium. The Wildcats are the only team Ka Makani has lost to in 2024 — falling in four sets on Sept. 11.
The Lions are still winless at 0-16 and have been eliminated from a playoff spot. They’ll conclude their season with a Tuesday night match against Ehunui at Old Kona Airport.
CLA 3, Ka Umeke 2
Christian Liberty Academy won a nailbiter five-set match over Ka Umeke on Friday in Kea‘au. The Canefire earned their second win of the season (2-12).
Ka Umeke won the first two frames convincingly 25-13 and 25-21, but it was all CLA from there — winning out the last three sets 25-20, 25-16 and 15-11.
The Canefire will conclude its season with a match against Laupahoehoe tonight on the Hamakua Coast. Ka Umeke is still winless, and will play its last match of 2024 against Hilo tonight at home.
Both teams have been eliminated from postseason play.
Kohala 3, Kanu 0
Kohala girls volleyball, still in the sweepstakes for a playoff spot, beat Kanu o ka ‘Aina in straight sets Saturday morning in Kapa‘au. With the win, the Cowgirls rose above .500 at 8-7 — moving above Honoka‘a for the No. 5 seeding in BIIF Division II.
Kohala won by scores of 25-10, 25-19 and 25-11. The Cowgirls will next take the court against the Dragons on Tuesday to conclude their regular season. Kanu (2-13) has been eliminated for postseason contention, and will next face Kealakehe on Tuesday night in Kona town.
