Man seriously injured in cliff fall

A 35-year-old man was hospitalized in serious condition after a fall down a cliff by Rainbow Falls in Hilo early Sunday evening.

According to a Hawaii Fire Department statement, the man was attempting to climb down a cliff wall next to the 80-feet-high falls when he fell, first onto a rock outcropping then into the pond at the bottom of the falls.

A county helicopter was used to extricate the man from the rock ledge. He was then taken by ambulance to the Hilo Medical Center emergency room.
