HONOLULU (AP) — A Kalakaua Middle School teacher will be honored with a national education award.
The state Department of Education said eighth-grade science teacher Michelle Kay is Hawaii’s latest recipient of the Milken Educator Award.
The prestigious award recognizes excellence in education and comes with a $25,000 cash prize.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie surprised Kay with the announcement at a school assembly Monday. Abercrombie said Hawaii is lucky to have teachers like Kay who find innovative ways to teach children.
She is credited with spearheading a robotics program that led to the school competing in national and international events.
She is one of 40 secondary school teachers nationwide who will receive the award this school year. More than 70 Hawaii teachers since 1990 have received the award.
