Beginning next week, the county will scale back its COVID testing sites as new daily case totals continue to decline.
Over the last few weeks, Hawaii County has held 14 COVID testing sites around the Big Island between Monday and Saturday week. However, during March, those efforts will be reduced to nine sites each week.
“At this point, the data is showing that we can begin scaling back and refocusing our efforts on other pertinent issues, such as economic resurgence,” wrote Mayor Mitch Roth in a statement.
On Thursday, the state Department of Health reported 289 new COVID cases statewide, 38 of which were on the Big Island.
Hawaii County COVID cases have remained below triple digits for nearly a week, after reaching 120 on Feb. 18.
“This does not mean that we should stop getting tested or vaccinated to help to keep ourselves and those around us safe; it just means that for now, we can refocus County resources on other matters,” read Roth’s statement. “Should the data tell us otherwise down the road, we will adjust and respond accordingly.”
The new COVID testing schedule will be in effect at least until March 31. Any changes beyond that date have yet to be determined.
The forthcoming testing schedule will be as follows:
Monday:
• 7-10 a.m. at Hisaoka Gym at Kamehameha Park in North Kohala
• 2-5 p.m. at Waimea District Park Playcourt in South Kohala
Tuesday:
• 3-7 p.m. at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo
Wednesday:
• 7-8 a.m. at Yano Hall in South Kona
• 3-7 p.m. at Old Kona Airport Pavilion in North Kona
Thursday:
• 3-7 p.m. at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo
• 3-5 p.m. at Naalehu Community Center in Ka‘u
Friday:
• 2-5 p.m. at Pahoa Community Center in Puna
• 2-5 p.m. at Old Kona Airport Pavilion in North Kona
Saturday:
• 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Waimea District Park Playcourt in South Kohala
