During the week of Sept. 27-Oct. 3, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for DUI. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, seven; Puna, six; South Hilo, two; Hamakua and South Kohala, one each.
So far this year, there have been 808 DUI arrests compared to 724 during the same period last year, an increase of 11.6%.
There have been 601 major accidents so far this year compared to 585 during the same period last year, an increase of 2.7%.
To date, there have been 18 official traffic fatalities, compared to 13 fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 38.5%.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
