‘We cannot forget’

JOHN BURNETT/Tribune-Herald Headstones at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 1 in Hilo are adorned with flags Monday morning in observance of Memorial Day. The cemetery is empty due to the coronavirus pandemic. The main flag at the pavilion flies at half-staff by order of Gov. David Ige to honor U.S. military members who lost their lives in service to the country and those who've died during the pandemic.

Memorial Day is viewed by many, if not most, as the unofficial start of summer, a three-day weekend marked by beach outings and backyard barbecues — and the meaning of the actual holiday is all but forgotten.
