A talented quartet of quilters from South Kona won the People’s Choice Award in Volcano Art Center’s bi-annual quilt show, “Quilts in the Forest — Where the Path May Lead.”
The four-panel winning quilt was created as a collaborative effort by Valerie Brewer, Trudy Koszarek, Annabelle Treacy and Catherine Wynne.
“We all love to quilt, but each has her own distinctive style and technique, and we wondered how they would mesh,” stated the women. “We drew a picture of our imaginary Hawaiian forest path, divided it in four pieces and this was the result.”
The prize, a quilt-inspired necklace made by Volcano jewelry artist Tad Sewell specifically for the event, will now be shared by the four winners.
The “Quilts in the Forest — Where the Path May Lead” exhibition was open to all full-time and part-time residents of the Hawaii Island, whether amateur or professional quilters. The aim of this year’s show was to inspire quilters to explore new and innovative ways of quilting. The exhibit closed Aug. 4.
