The theme at the Wailoa Center Fountain Gallery from March 2-23 will be “Celebrating Bowls in Hawaii for 20 Years” for the 20th annual Big Island Woodturners Exhibit.
A meet-the-artist reception is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. March 2. The Woodturners are honored to welcome world-class collectors of turned wood art Jeff Bernstine and Judy Chernoff, who will say a few words about the exhibit and offer their observations.
The Woodturners Exhibit is free to the public and can be viewed from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Woodturning demonstrations will be conducted on three Saturdays during the exhibit. There also will be an educational display of local and exotic woods.
The nonprofit Big Island Woodturners Club is dedicated to educating its members and the public about woodturning. In addition to its annual exhibit, the club hosts bimonthly meetings at various studios, club challenges, visiting demonstrators and free public woodturning demonstrations. There is no membership fee; the only requirement is participation.

The public is invited to a series of woodturning demonstrations during the 20th annual Big Island Woodturners Exhibit:
• 10 a.m.-2 p.m. March 3, Pat Kramer, ‘Umeke La‘au: A Rich Hawaiian Tradition — Bowls.
• 10 a.m.-2 p.m. March 10, Aaron Hammer, a tree-to-table presentation; Gene Short, making spinning tops.
• 10 a.m.-2 p.m. March 17, Mark Stebbins, “How to Repair Broken Bowls.” The public is invited to bring in their broken bowls and have a discussion about repair. Also, Emiliano Achaval, president of the Maui Woodturners Club, will turn a natural edge bowl.
