Dodgers belt 5 homers, escape Colorado with split

Max Muncy homered twice and finished with four hits, Dalton Rushing also went deep twice, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 12-3 in Denver on Monday night.

Miguel Rojas homered and singled twice to reach 1,000 career hits, Santiago Espinal had two hits and Shohei Ohtani had a hit and two walks to extend his on-base streak to 52 games, one behind Shawn Green for second on the club’s all-time list since the move to Los Angeles.

Dodgers starter Justin Wrobleski (3-0) allowed one run on eight hits in seven innings. He struck out three without walking a batter.

TJ Rumfield homered, Jordan Beck had three hits and Willi Castro and Brett Sullivan each singled twice for Colorado.

Rumfield entered the game in the bottom of the first when Tyler Freeman left with an illness.

The teams split the four-game series as the Dodgers’ snapped their first two-game losing streak of the season.

The Rockies took a 1-0 lead when Beck and Brenton Doyle opened the first with consecutive doubles, but Los Angeles jumped on top in the second when Muncy and Rojas hit back-to-back homers.

The Dodgers padded the lead in the third. Ohtani and Alex Call hit singles, Ohtani scored on an error by third baseman Kyle Karros, and Call came home on a double play. Los Angeles made it 5-1 in the fourth when Colorado starter Jose Quintana balked with the bases loaded, bringing home Muncy.

Muncy and Rojas began the sixth with singles to chase Quintana, and Muncy eventually scored when Tanner Gordon walked Call with three aboard.

Quintana (0-2) allowed six runs — four earned — on eight hits in five-plus innings. He walked one and fanned one.

Los Angeles added a run in the seventh when Gordon misplayed Rojas’ sacrifice bunt for Colorado’s third error of the game. Two more scored in the eighth on Rushing’s home run and an RBI single by Teoscar Hernandez.

Rumfield homered in the eighth and Muncy led off the ninth with his second of the game and eighth of the season. Rushing hit a two-run homer later in the ninth, his seventh of the year.

Mid-game homer sparks Athletics’ rally vs. Mariners

Carlos Cortes, Nick Kurtz and Shea Langeliers hit solo homers as the Athletics rallied from an early deficit by scoring six consecutive runs in a 6-4 victory against the host Seattle Mariners on Monday.

Cal Raleigh and Dominic Canzone supplied solo shots for the Mariners, who had a two-game winning streak snapped in the opener of a three-game series.

A’s reliever Hogan Harris (2-0) pitched 1 2/3 perfect innings for the victory and Joel Kuhnel worked a one-run ninth for his fourth save of the season.

With the Athletics up 6-3 in the ninth, the Mariners’ Cole Young lined a one-out single to center field and Leo Rivas followed with an RBI double into the right field corner, bringing the potential tying run to the plate. Kuhnel got J.P. Crawford to foul out to third base and Raleigh to fly out to shallow right to end the game.

The A’s, who moved a half-game ahead of Texas for sole possession of first place in American League West, scored three runs in the eighth to break a 3-3 tie.

Tyler Soderstrom led off the eighth with a double to left field off Mariners reliever Casey Legumina (0-1). Soderstrom advanced to third as Jacob Wilson grounded a single to right. Jeff McNeil walked to load the bases, and Max Muncy’s sacrifice fly to right scored Soderstrom with the go-ahead run. Lawrence Butler lined a two-run single to right to cap the scoring.

Both starters pitched well, but neither factored into the decision.

A’s right-hander J.T. Ginn allowed three runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings, with one walk and six strikeouts.

The Mariners’ Emerson Hancock went five-plus innings and gave up three runs on seven hits. The right-hander didn’t walk a batter and struck out three.

Seattle scored twice in the first and once in the second for a 3-0 lead.

Raleigh homered to left-center with one out in the first. Julio Rodriguez lined a single to center, stole second and scored on Josh Naylor’s double to right.

Canzone went deep to right-center leading off the bottom of the second.

Cortes, who went 4-for-5, homered to right leading off the fourth to spark the Athletics’ comeback. Kurtz and Langeliers went back-to-back to center to open the sixth, tying the score and ending Hancock’s outing.

Guerrero Jr. powers Blue Jays to victory over Angels

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored and Dylan Cease struck out 12 batters while picking up his first win as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Los Angeles Angels, 5-2, in the opener of a three-game series in Anaheim, Calif.

Guerrero extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Nathan Lukes drove in two runs and Eloy Jimenez had two hits for Toronto, which won its second straight game.

Cease (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks over five innings and took over the major league lead in strikeouts with 44 with his 12-strikeout effort. He left after throwing 110 pitches, 69 for strikes.

Jeff Hoffman struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his third save.

Nolan Schanuel had a double, a run scored and an RBI and Zach Neto reached base twice with a single and a walk, stole two bases and scored a run for Los Angeles, which struck out 18 times while suffering its third straight defeat.

Reid Detmers (1-2) picked up the loss, allowing four runs on five hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out five.

Los Angeles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Schanuel hit a two-out, opposite-field double down the left field line and scored on a single by Jorge Soler.

Toronto took a 2-1 lead in the third on Guerrero’s two-run homer, a 430-foot drive to center that drove in Davis Schneider, who had opened the inning with a walk.

The Angels tied it, 2-2, in the bottom half of the third. Neto led off with a walk, went to second on an infield single by Mike Trout, and advanced to the third on the front end of a double-steal. Schanuel then drove in Neto with a sacrifice fly to center.

The Blue Jays regained the lead, 3-2, in the sixth inning when Guerrero led off with a single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Lenyn Sosa.

Toronto extended the lead to 4-2 in the seventh on an RBI single by Lukes, and made it 5-2 in the ninth on an RBI groundout by Lukes.

12th-inning grand slam propels Orioles past Royals

Leody Taveras’ grand slam highlighted a five-run 12th inning, after Samuel Basallo forced extras with a two-out, opposite-field RBI single in the ninth, and the Baltimore Orioles handed the host Kansas City Royals an eighth straight loss, 7-5 on Monday.

Baltimore had three hits through 11 innings but doubled that total in the 12th, when 21-year-old catcher Basallo broke a 2-2 tie with his second RBI single of the night. Then with the bags full, Taveras sent a pitch from Alex Lange (0-2) over the center-field wall for his first grand slam, which helped the Orioles win for just the second time in seven contests.

The Orioles managed only Taylor Ward’s first-inning double through the first eight innings. Then in the ninth, Kansas City’s Lucas Erceg walked three batters, and with two outs and runners on first and second, Basallo lined a hit to left to tie things at 1-1.
