Pruning class offered Saturday in Hilo
“The Art of Pruning Black Pine Trees” will be taught by Phil Hulber in Lili‘uokalani Gardens from 8 a.m. to noon this Saturday.
Hulbert retired to Honomu several years after more than 50 years in the Pacific Northwest designing, installing and maintaining Japanese-style landscapes.

He is expert in niwaki and bonsai, techniques used to prune and train trees.
“Having Phil volunteer in Lili‘uokalani Gardens for the past five years has made a wonderful difference to the Sister City grove of black pine trees,” said K.T. Cannon-Eger, president of Friends of Lili‘uokalani Gardens. “He also donated a dwarf podocarpus to Shoro-an, the tea house garden, and helps foster that area.”
This class will be of interest to people wishing to maintain their own home gardens as well as those who work in the landscape maintenance business. Everyone will have an opportunity for hands-on learning.
Please register by contacting folghilo@gmail.com by Wednesday, Jan. 28.
The class will meet at the east torii gate near the Sister City pine grove.
