Baseball and softball state playoff action continued on Oahu Wednesday, as Big Island teams played in the HHSAA and consolation brackets.
Baseball
BIIF DI runner-up Kamehameha-Hawaii lost in the opening round of the DI state bracket, falling to Saint Louis 5-1 at Iron Maehara Stadium.
The Crusaders edged the Warriors in hits 6-5. Kamakanikailialoha Kane finished with two hits and three RBI, while teammates Kahanukalahou Martinez, Mana Heffernan, Jonah Brub and Chase Kawakami each had one hit for Saint Louis.
Levi Perry earned the win for the Crusaders after allowing just four hits and one run across 83 pitches (6.0 innings). Aycen Fernandez closed the game out for Saint Louis shortly after.
Justin Kobojiri, Noah Palea, Keagan Pacheco, Kani Nettrour and Dayton Hanson each had one hit for KSH. Palea was the sole pitcher on the mound for the Warriors, allowing five runs off six hits while striking out five.
The Crusaders moved to 12-6 overall on the season, and played second-seeded Mililani in the quarterfinals.
KSH fell to 11-2-1, and played Iolani in Thursday’s consolation matchup. See the paper next week to read on how the Warriors finished on Oahu.
Softball
No. 4 seed Hilo softball failed to muster any offense in its DI quarterfinal matchup against Punahou, ultimately falling 10-0 at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium and moving to the consolation bracket.
The Buffanblu put on a hitting clinic, edging the Vik Queens in hits 10-1 while committing no errors defensively. Hilo committed two errors.
Taryn Ho led Punahou with two hits, including a homer. Teammate Austen Kinney added three hits, while Lexi Hinahara, Faatamali Brown, Sydney Capello, Kealoha Cox and Taimane Mataafa each had one.
Paige Brunn was the game’s winning pitcher in the circle, lasting six innings while allowing one hit and no runs while striking out five batters.
Kaylie Carceres was the only Hilo batter to produce a hit. Molly Davi took the loss in the circle, allowing all 10 runs while striking out three.
The Buffanblu moved to 14-3 on the season, advancing to Thursday’s semifinals against first-seeded Mililani.
The Vik Queens suffered their first loss of the season after running the table in BIIF competition. They faced KS-Kapalama in the fifth-place semifinals late Thursday afternoon. See next week’s paper for more.
Over at McKinley High School, KSH fell 14-3 to Waimea in the opening round of the DII state tournament, falling to 8-4. The Lady Menehunes improved to 8-7.
Waimea had seven hits to KSH’s four. Kamaile Valente led the way with a game-high four hits, while Waimea teammates Kaliea Itamura, Nia Pablo, Alia Lazaro and Shelcee Nakaya each had one. Nakaya was additionally the game’s winning pitcher, allowing just four hits and three runs while striking out four.
Kealohi Ili led the Lady Warriors with two hits, followed by teammates Alaula Awong and Naiya Avenue with one apiece.
Olaa Brown was the sole pitcher in the circle for KSH, allowing seven hits and 14 runs.
Waimea moved on to play second-seeded Pearl City in Thursday’s semifinal, while the Lady Warriors played Radford in the fifth-place semifinals.
Pahoa fell 14-12 to Waialua in its consolation game at McKinley, officially ending its season. Both teams had nine hits.
Jadyn Miller and Marley Blackmore each had two hits to lead the Lady Bulldogs, while teammates Harlee Dicion, Irish Crowley, Aylia Sintos-Dela Cruz, Sandy Agtarap and Blessany Meehan each had one. Dicion was named the game’s winning pitcher after striking out seven, while Aika Guzman closed the game.
Ariana Kobayshi, Isabella Tokelau, Kawena Alatini and Remedy Gonzalez each had two hits for the Lady Daggers, while Kalena Alatini had one. Kawena Alatini and Aolani Lynch shared time on the mound for Pahoa.
Waialua moved on to the 10th-place championship game.
