The Big Island Interscholastic Federation boys volleyball’s early season continued Monday across the isle. Action resumes today.
Kona 3, Honoka‘a 2
Konawaena boys volleyball won its season-opening match after battling with Honoka‘a in five sets inside the Dragons’ gymnasium. Honoka‘a lost its second match of the year to fall to 0-2.
The Dragons took the opening set 25-21, but the Wildcats countered with a 25-17 second-frame win. Honoka‘a then won a narrow 26-24 third set, putting itself in position to win the match.
But the Wildcats were not ready to lie down. They dominated in the final two sets to seal the road win — 25-14 and an impressive 15-2 final frame.
The green and white will return to the court at 3 p.m. this afternoon at Waimea District Gymnasium to take on Parker, while the Dragons will try to redeem themselves against Kohala at 5 p.m. Friday at home. Junior varsity will play first prior to both varsity matches.
Pahoa 3, Connections 0
Pahoa boys volleyball won its third straight match after sweeping the hosting Connections ‘Io in Hilo town. The Daggers improved to 3-1 overall while Connections fell to 0-3.
Pahoa won by set scores of 25-9, 25-7 and 25-12. Riding a hot streak, the Daggers will look to keep it going against east-side powerhouse Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i at 10 a.m. Saturday in Kea‘au. Junior varsity will have first serve before varsity begins.
The ‘Io will play local competition in the Hilo Vikings at 10 a.m. Saturday at home.
Parker 3, Kanu 0
Parker boys volleyball won its second straight match after routing the hosting Kanu o ka ‘Aina inside Waimea District Gymnasium in consecutive sets.
The victorious Bulls won by set scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-18. The win comes after a restful week off after beating Hawaii Preparatory Academy on Feb. 24. They’ll return to competition against Konawaena this afternoon on their home court.
For Kanu, it was its first match of the season. The team will seek redemption against Kona on March 10 in its next matchup.
