HILO — Waiakea girls basketball’s season came to an end Monday afternoon inside the Lady Warriors’ gymnasium.
Facing off against the visiting Campbell Lady Sabers in the first round of the 2025 Pacific Century Fund Team Aloha Girls Basketball Division I State Championships, Waiakea fell 53-29. From the opening tip, Campbell made its presence known on the court — out-scoring the Lady Warriors 15-2 in the first eight minutes. That set the tone for the remainder of the duel, and the Lady Warriors could not recover in time.
The 11-6 Lady Sabers had two double-figure scorers — Jaynalyn Sotelo with 15 points, six rebounds, three assists two steals and three blocks to go along with Kamai Lei Ringor’s 11 points, 13 rebounds and two assists. Campbell put forth a defensive masterclass, tallying 14 steals and four blocks as a unit. Cayden Parado finished with a game-high five swipes.
It was the ninth time this season that the Lady Sabers held an opponent to 30 points or less.
On the season, Campbell averages nearly 58 points per game. Sotelo remains the group’s top scorer at 15.4 points per contest.
Kaya Texeira was Waiakea’s leading scorer with 11 points to go along with eight rebounds. Teammate Hayley Toomey also scored nine points.
The Lady Warriors end their season at 8-9 overall and 7-7 in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF). They averaged 36.7 points per game, led by Texeira with 11.4.
The Lady Sabers move on to Thursday’s quarterfinals, set to face fourth-seeded Maui at 7 p.m. at Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama.
Hilo 44, Pahoa 39
Hilo boys basketball won its second straight game in a 44-39 road win over the hosting Daggers on Monday night in Pahoa town.
The Vikings’ 17-point quarter gave the visitors the juice they needed for the remainder of the night. Hilo had no double-digit scorers, but Kingston Frazier led the way with nine points, followed by Xarren Jose and Jason Birrueta combining for 15.
This season, the Vikings average 49.9 points per game while allowing 41.2.
Daggers swingman Kyran Canete, who leads all of Hawai‘i in scoring at 27.9 points per game, scored a game-high 21 points. Canete has been on a tear all season, logging six 30-point games. Pahoa averages 57.4 points per game this season while allowing 49.4.
Hilo moved to 9-9 overall on the season and 8-5 in the BIIF. The Vikings will return to the floor at 5:30 p.m. tonight against Hawaii Preparatory Academy in Hilo. Junior varsity will tip off first, then followed by varsity.
The Daggers fell to 6-8, with their next matchup to be announced.
HPA 67, SJS 14
HPA boys basketball logged one of its most dominant games of the season Monday in Kea‘au, blasting St. Joseph’s 67-14 to earn its 11th straight win. Ka Makani moved up to 17-5 overall and 11-1 in league play.
