The first Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) track meet was held on Saturday at Kamehameha Schools – Hawai‘i.
Two Pai‘ea Stadium records were broken — as Waiakea High senior pole vaulter Analissa Paressa cleared 11’7 to smash the previous record of 10’6, which was achieved by three different athletes between 2011 and 2015.
Konawaena freshman Violet Schaut also broke the stadium’s girls 200 meter dash record, clocking in at 25.58 to lead the state this weekend and surpass the 25.74 second record clocked in 2016 by Hawaii Prep’s Emma Taylor.
HPA dominated the girls’ side of Saturday’s meet, scoring 131.5 points — trailed by No. 2 Waiakea (100 pts.), No. 3 Hilo High (86.50), No. 4 Konawaena (80), No. 5 Kealakehe (58) and No. 6 KS-Hawai‘i (43). Parker School and Pahoa High’s girls each scored a point to tie for seventh place.
The hosts finished atop the boys’ standings, as KS-Hawai‘i totalled 134.5 points — trailed closely by Konawaena with 122 points. Waiakea placed No. 3 with 86 points, followed by No. 4 Kealakehe (57), No. 5 Hilo (35.5), No. 6 Pahoa (31), No. 7 HPA (21), No. 8 St. Joseph School (16), No. 9 Laupahoehoe CPCS (10), No. 10 Parker (5), No. 11 Ka‘u (3) and a tie for No. 12 between Kea‘au High and Makua Lani Christian with two points apiece.
Top finishers
HPA junior Elaina Head cleared 4’10 — a top-ten state height — to place first in the girls’ high jump. Head also was No. 1 in the triple jump, measuring in at 33-3 — and No. 2 in the long jump at 15-5.75 behind No. 1 Layla Grace of Kealakehe (16-6.75).
KSH’s Luke Tyrin cleared 4’10 to place No. 1 in the boys’ high jump. In addition to Paressa’s record breaking pole vault, Waiakea’s Ausity Urubio cleared 8’6 to place No. 2 in the girls’ event and among the state’s top ten. WHS’ Shelby Cabais-Fernandez PR’d at 14’1 to win the boys’ pole vault — just short of the stadium record of 14’6 set by his brother, Eric, in 2019.
KSH senior Kahiau Poe long-jumped a state-leading distance of 21-7.75 to win the boys’ event. Poe placed second in the triple jump behing KSH sophomore Kekainalu Fuerte — who measured in at 39-7, putting him among the state’s top ten. Poe also won the boys’ 100 meter dash at 11.17.
Waiakea’s Moriah Amuimuia and Hilo’s Nariyah Suiaunoa each threw for 26-6.50 to lead the girls’ shot put. Two Kona boys topped the boys’ event —No. 1 Elias Malapit (44-1) and No. 2 Hiwa Sata-Ellis (39-9.50).
Suiaunoa threw for 85-10 to win the girls’ discus, trailed by classmate Teyahlia Kepoo-Deconte (81-10) in second place.
KSH senior Matthew Yamada led the boys’ discus event, notching a PR of 126-5.
The Halpern twins, Hulali and Malino, paired with Maya Schneider and Aneala Sibayan to get the Vikings the win in the girls 4×800 relay — clocking in at 10:49.32.
Waiakea’s cross country stars led the Warriors to win the boys’ 4×800 — as Austin Mohica, Kiran Letawski, Carlos Soto-Centeno and Shane Tominaga combined for a time of 8:51.89.
HPA basketball star Brooke “Kahena” Samura notched a state-leading 100 meter hurdle time of 17.49. In the boys’ 110 meter hurdles, Laanui Meyers won at 16.44 and Pahoa basketball star Kaumuali’i Gancinia came in a close second at 17.87 — both placed among the state’s top ten.
In addition to her stadium record in the 200 meter dash, Schaut placed first, PR’d and led the state in the 100 meter dash — clocking in at 12.39.
Hulali Halpern PR’d and placed first in the girls’ 400 meter dash, notching a state-leading time of 1:00.23. Halpern returned later to win the girls’ 3000 meter run, clocking in at a PR of 10:39.22 — which is among the top ten in the USA, according to MileSplit. Kealakehe’s Elisa Childers was close behind with a national top-25 time of 11:17.48.
Leeward-side small schools earned representation in the boys 400 meter dash — which was won by Laupahoehoe sophomore Tazein Sykes in 54.14 seconds. Behind No. 2 Kekai Haines of HPA (54.43) was St. Jo junior Amari Wiedemeier at 54.74.
Malino Halpern won the girls’ 1500 meter run at 5:25.69 — just ahead of No. 2 HPA’s Wynter Radey-Morgan at 5:27.97.
Konawaena Junior Isaac Keana‘aina won the boys’ 1500 with an impressive time of 4:31.35.
The Wildcats’ ‘A’ team — Dasha Kala, Jazmin Fillmore, Rustee Meyers and Violet Schaut — won the girls’ 4×100 relay in 50.89 seconds. The same squad also won Konawaena the girls’ 4×400 at 4:10.88.
Waiakea’s boys ‘A’ team — made up of soccer and cross country veterans Justin Ah Sing, Aziah Nelson, Kaden Aguilar and Sabastian Ortiz-Bloom — led the Warriors to a first-place finish in the boys 4×100 at 46.19. Nelson, Aguilar, Ortiz-Bloom and Henry Huovinen combined to win the boys’ 4×400 in 3:42.65.
Konawaena freshman Jazmin Fillmore PR’d a state-leading time of 47.08 to win the girls’ 300 meter hurdles. Meyers and Gancinia were again the top two in the boys’ 300 meter hurdles — clocking in at 42.01 and 42.68, respectively.
Waiakea freshman Camila Megargal won the girls’ 800 meter run with a PR of 2:49.37. Keana‘aina won the boys’ event at 2:12.55, less than a second ahead of Kealakehe’s Noah Rosenbloom, at 2:12.67.
Hilo’s Tai Hess dominated the boys’ 3000 meter run, clocking in at 10:24.19. Pahoa freshman Oakley Allen placed No. 2 at 11:02.38, just ahead of SJS sophomore Yuriy Russo at 11:06.61.
