Hawaii Care Choices is creating a new tradition to help people grieve and remember lost loved ones during the holiday season.
The organization’s annual holiday event, Season of Light, is changing from a holiday gathering to a communitywide memorial to remind everyone that they are not alone in their grief.
“During the holidays, people struggle because it can be overemphasized that they are alone after loss,” said Lani Weigert, Hawaii Care Choices engagement marketing manager. “This is our way of letting them know they are not, and never will be, alone. We’re here and so many others around them are as well.”
This year’s Season of Light event will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday under the large pavilion at Wailoa River State Recreation Area, 799 Piilani St.
The hourlong free event will begin with speakers and live music, and then will turn into a candlelight memorial at the end.
According to Weigert, one flame will be passed around to every person in attendance, eventually creating a huge circle of candlelight.
“The single light that spreads to all of us is the physical reminder that you are not alone in your grief,” Weigert said. “The event is not about entertaining, but about holding space where people can take a moment to remember their people and feel inspired to go on.”
During the event, different speakers will talk about “Christmas past” in terms of love, “Christmas present” in terms of peace, and “Christmas future” in terms of hope.
After the candlelight ceremony closes the event, those who register can take a “keepsake box” that is filled with items like a candle, lavender spray and frame to help build a little alter for loved ones back home.
“Everyone goes through grief differently, and it’s the most painful thing we do,” Weigert said. “Looking at the flame of candlelight can help people think of their loved ones and give them a moment to remind them that although they aren’t physically here, they are always with you in your memory.”
Hawaii Care Choices — formerly Hospice of Hilo — hopes to continue the Season of Light as a memorial during the holidays every year for families and friends needing a supportive way to miss and remember the deceased.
“The Season of Light is now about coming together one more time at the end of the year for a big communal hug,” Weigert said. “This year, it’s about creating the space for remembrance and giving everyone hope that there is a better tomorrow.”
Along with palliative and hospice care, Hawaii Care Choices is also available for bereavement services for children, families and anyone who has experienced loss.
