Police arrest 12 for DUI

During the week of Nov. 27-Dec. 3, Hawaii Island police arrested 12 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision. One of the drivers was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, five; Hilo, three; Puna, two; North Kohala and South Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 865 DUI arrests compared to 907 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.6%.

There have been 777 major collisions so far this year compared to 771 during the same period last year, an increase of 0.8%.

To date, there have 16 official traffic fatalities, compared to 32 fatalities at the same time last year, a decrease of 50%.

There has been one traffic-related death this year that isn’t in the official count, because it didn’t occur on a public roadway.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
