Ka‘u High School was one of three schools throughout the state honored with the 2023 Cooke Beautification Award for Public Schools.
The $5,000 awards are presented every two years to recognize local public and charter schools for completed beautification projects that improve their school environment.
Ka‘u High was recognized for a recently completed mural titled “Ka‘u Ku Makaha,” or Ka‘u Stands Fierce.
The mural was a collaborative effort from students, artists, cultural practitioners, kupuna and teachers as they returned to in-person learning after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The students also participated in a blessing of the mural.
The award can be used in any way the school chooses.
The two other award winners for the 2023 Cooke Beautification Award were Lihikai Elementary on Maui and President Abraham Lincoln Elementary on Oahu.
