23 Big Island schools will offer free meals this summer
The state Department of Education announced that 86 public schools throughout the state will serve free meals over the summer to children 18 years and younger, regardless of enrollment status.
For the Big Island, 23 schools will participate this year including: E. B. de Silva Elementary, Hilo High, Hilo Intermediate, Honokaa High and Intermediate, Ka‘u High and Pahala Elementary, Ke Kula ‘O ‘Ehunuikaimalino, Keaau Elementary, Keaau High, Keaau Middle, Kealakehe Elementary, Kealakehe Intermediate, Keaukaha Elementary, Keonepoko Elementary, Kohala Elementary, Kohala Middle, Konawaena High, Konawaena Middle, Mountain View Elementary, Naalehu Elementary, Pahoa High and Intermediate, Waiakea High, Waiakea Intermediate and Waimea Elementary.

Starting in June, the Seamless Summer Option, or SSO program, will serve meals at the public school locations on Mondays through Fridays, with the exception of June 12 for King Kamehameha Day and July 4 for Independence Day.
The SSO is an extension of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs and is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to ensure children receive nutritious meals during summer.
Schools can opt to serve breakfast only, lunch only or both meals, and parents can call their nearest participating school directly for more details.
Summer meals are offered for on-campus dining only and are no longer offered in “grab and go” containers.
