$50M slated for Hilo Medical Center expansion

Funding for a large expansion of Hilo Medical Center is included in the final version of a state budget bill.

The budget includes $50 million to expand HMC’s intensive care unit and medical surgical unit.

The announcement was made by state Sen. Lorraine Inouye, who represents Hilo, Paukaa, Papaikou and Pepeekeo. The funds were included in the latest version of House Bill 300, which was finalized today.

Gov. Josh Green had requested $50 million for the HMC project, but House lawmakers in March initially cut it to $25 million before the full amount was later restored.
