HILO – The University of Hawai’i at Hilo men’s tennis team enjoyed its first home match of the season as it fired past Division-III Cal Lutheran 6-1 on Friday morning at the UHH Tennis Courts.
In doubles action, the duos of Luca Matheiowetz and Ryosuke Sowa plus Coby Pearce and Filippo Di Perna picked up their third wins of the season while Zen Yoshida and Agustin Gentile got win No. 2 of the spring.
In singles, Gentile notched a team-leading fourth victory of the season.
Cal Lutheran’s lone point came at the No. 1 spot as Park McBride squeezed by for the 6-4, 7-5 win.
UH-Hilo improved to a 3-8 record as Cal Lutheran fell to 2-7 overall.
The Vulcans will head back to the mainland to Denver, Colorado — where they’ll take on Colorado Mesa and Metro State Denver next weekend.
UH-Hilo will return home for its final match at home against HPU on April 14.
The Pacific West Conference Championships are set for April 19–22 in Surprise, Arizona.
The first PacWest Championships tennis rankings were released this past Wednesday with the Vulcans coming in at No. 9.
These rankings, voted on by a committee, will determine the top right teams that will qualify for next month’s postseason tournament.
Two more iterations of the weekly rankings will be released in the coming weeks.
