The County Department of Public Works is warning of likely delays along Kilauea Avenue and Keawe Street throughout April as a lengthy road rehabilitation project begins.
The County Department of Public Works is warning of likely delays along Kilauea Avenue and Keawe Street throughout April as a lengthy road rehabilitation project begins.
Beginning on April 3, crews will work at intersections along the downtown Hilo road to locate underground utility lines in preparation for greater road repairs expected to last until August 2024. Drivers are advised that lane closures or detour routing may occur throughout the month.
However, no construction on the road is scheduled for the week of April 7 through April 16, to avoid interfering with increased traffic during the Merrie Monarch Festival.
According to a tentative county work schedule, work will begin April 3 at the road’s intersection with Waianuenue Avenue, then shift to Kalakaua Street beginning April 6.
After Merrie Monarch, work at the Kalakaua intersection will pick up again on the 17th. Work will shift to the Haili Street intersection on April 20, to Furneaux Lane on April 24, to Mamo Street on April 26, and to Ponahawai Street April 28.
Drivers are advised to check the County Public Works website for updates and detour routes.
