HVO lowers Mauna Loa alert level
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has downgraded its alert level for Mauna Loa after more than three months of calm.
Since Mauna Loa’s eruption ended Dec. 13, HVO reports that the volcano has been quiet, with the number of earthquakes beneath its summit returning “to background levels.”
Accordingly, the observatory on Thursday lowered Mauna Loa’s volcano alert level for ground-based hazards from Advisory to Normal, and the aviation color code from Yellow to Green.
With the volcano quieted down, HVO’s updates on Mauna Loa will shift from weekly to monthly, with the next one to be released April 6.
However, HVO will continue to monitor the volcano closely and will issue a notice should its activity change significantly.
