Police arrest 23 for DUI

During the week of Jan. 23-29, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for DUI.

Eight of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Three of the drivers were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona and South Hilo, eight each; Puna, five; and South Kohala, two.

So far this year, there have been 95 DUI arrests compared ti 83 during the same period last year, an increase of 14.45%.

After a review of all updated crashes, HPD’s Traffic Services Section found 76 major accidents so far this year compared to 68 during the same period last year, an increase of 10.5%.

To date, there have been three official traffic fatalities, compared to six fatalities for the same time last year, a decrease of 50%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
