Police arrest 17 for DUI

During the week of Dec. 19-25, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence.

Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Four were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, seven; Puna, four; South Hilo, three; South Kohala, two; and North Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 965 DUI arrests compared to 1,057 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.7%.

There have been 829 major accidents so far this year compared to 801 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.5%.
