East Hawaii is home to some spook-tacular events next weekend and on Halloween.
The Palace Theater will be hosting its first Haunted Palace from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
The theater will be set up like a haunted house, where attendees will have eight bone-chilling settings to walk through featuring dozens of scary volunteers and pipe organ music from a phantom.
On Halloween, the Palace will host its 12th annual “Rocky Horror Picture Show” screening and costume contest.
Before the movie, the theater will host family-friendly trick-or-treating with Big Island Pride from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Doors for “Rocky Horror” will open at 7 p.m. along with the costume contest sign-up, which is limited to the first 25 entrants.
Tickets for both Palace events can be purchased at hilopalace.com. Tickets to the Haunted Palace are limited, so advanced purchase is recommended.
More trick-or-treating will be open for keiki at the downtown Hilo museums and other businesses downtown from 2 p.m to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Mokuapapapa Discovery Center, Pacific Tsunami Museum, Hawaii Science and Technology Museum and the East Hawaii Cultural Center will all be welcoming costumed keiki.
The EHCC Youth Art Series also will be hosting a haunted house in collaboration with the Science and Technology Museum in the annex behind the center.
The haunted house will feature monster sculptures created by keiki 6 to 18.
The young artists were participating in EHCC’s Halloween art camp to learn about creating an artistic theme, similar to preparing a body of work for an exhibition.
With help from the Hilo Art Club and Waiakea Key Club, this will be the third year for the haunted house.
Admission is by donation, with all proceeds going to the youth art series.
The haunted house’s hours are 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. On Halloween, the house will be open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Outside of Hilo, the Volcano Art Center will host a Spooky Trail at VAC’s Niaulani Campus from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday.
The adventure begins with a tour of the Halloween Village, where a ghoul will lure visitors into the nearby Haunted Forest. Visitors may want to bring a flashlight.
This event is recommended for children 9 years old and older, as it may be too frightening for younger kids. The event costs $5 per person.
Children 9 and under can visit the trail from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Children 4 and under are free.
