Police arrest 22 for DUI

During the week of Sept. 22-18, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, eight; South Hilo, seven; Puna and South Kohala, three each; and North Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 719 DUI arrests compared to 766 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.1%.

There have been 584 major accidents so far this year compared to 568 during the same period last year, an increase of 2.8%.

To date, there have been 27 official traffic fatalities, compared to 16 fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 68.75%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
