Big Island residents are still advised to conserve power in the evenings at least through Saturday.
Hawaiian Electric has urged customers on the island to limit electricity use between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. this week in order to make up for an approximately 89-megawatt shortfall in power generation caused by the current shutdown of three power plants on the island.
Two plants — Hawaiian Electric’s Hill Plant Unit 5 and Puna Steam Plant — are currently undergoing scheduled maintenance, while the third, Hamakua Energy, has been unable to obtain ammonia necessary to control emissions because of supply chain issues.
So far, customers’ energy conservation efforts have been sufficient to avoid the need to conduct 30-minute rolling outages.
However, should those outages be necessary, Hawaiian Electric will notify customers in advance through social media at @HIElectricLight on Twitter.
