Hawaii Prep and Kamehameha engaged in a well-played, dramatic BIIF softball championship, but neither could recreate the moment in their respective HHSAA Division II quarterfinals.
Each bowed out via the mercy rule.
As the top seed, league champion Ka Makani got the feature treatment under the lights Thursday at Maui High, but they fell behind early and were put away late in the program’s first state assignment, falling 11-1 against Waimea of the Garden Isle.
HPA (8-1) managed just five hits, two off the bat of Johnna-Lee Lorenzo, and a first-inning run when Kyana Brucelas was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
April Kina’u Grace pitched all five innings for Ka Makani, yielding nine hits and five walks with four strikeouts.
Kalea Huihui-Caberto was 3 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored for Menehune (11-5-1). Huihui-Caberto’s two-run triple helped Waimea score four times in the top of the first, and she singled in the fourth to bring in two more as Menehune tacked on six runs. Hunter Akita added a two-run double and finished with two hits and three RBIs.
Taelor Camelo went the distance and walked only one with two strikeouts.
Neither team made an error
In consolation play, HPA will play Waialua at 2:15 p.m. Friday.
Kamehameha lost 13-3 to Waipahu, which scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to end it.
Kendalyn Cordeiro had the only extra-base hit of the contest, an RBI double in the first as the Marauders took a 4-1 lead.
The Warriors (7-3) committed four errors, and eight of the runs charged against Emily Hora were unearned. The right-hander yielded 10 hits and six walks with two strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
Kamehameha struck first when Rhian Ogawa (2 for 3) singled home Kealohilani Grace, who had reached on an error. Hits by Keanu Marie Huihui and Kailee Wagner helped the Warriors pull within 4-3 in the second inning, but Taylor Fukunaga pitched a complete game for Waipahu, allowing five hits, three runs (one earned), with one walk and four strikeouts.
Kamehameha gets Aiea in a noon consolation game today.
In a consolation game Thursday, Kaimuki beat Honokaa 10-7. Maile Espejo collected two hits with a run batted in for the Dragons (5-5), and she took the loss in the circle.
