It was a rough day for BIIF golfers at the state tournament on Monday on Maui. The news wasn’t any better as the HHSAA softball tournament started on Oahu.
On the Valley Isle, Waiakea sophomore Ryder Ng posted a 4-over 75 to place tied for 10th after the first round at Kaanapali, six strokes behind Hawaii Baptist senior Joshua Hayashida’s 2-under 69.
Kealakehe junior Kevin Yamashita was the BIIF’s next highest finisher with a 5-over 76, tied with Makua Lani junior Caleb Makoff.
BIIF champion Dysen Park was tied for 20th after a 6-over 77.
In a first-round Division I softball game at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium in Honolulu, Kaiser connected for 20 hits in beating BIIF runner-up Hilo 15-4.
Shortstop Quinn Waiki and first baseman Kira Alameda starred in defeat. Waiki homered and hit a double as part of a 4-for-4 day, while Alameda also was 4 for 4, including a pair of RBI doubles.
The Vikings’ Hau’oli Kalipi walked nine and struck out two in going the distance.
The Cougars scored in every inning, including six times in the top of the seventh.
While the Vikings fall into consolation play Tuesday, BIIF champion Kealakehe, seeded fourth, faces Mililani in a noon quarterfinal. The Trojans beat Kalani 13-3 in five innings.
The D-II tournament gets started Wednesday on Maui.
Also in gold on Maui, Hilo junior Darrell Ramos Jr. was tied for 27th after a 9-over 80. Waiakea sophomore Noah Otani was tied for 44th after a 15-over 86. Kealakehe freshman Xander Broderson was tied for 54th after an 18-over 89. Hilo freshman Reyn Kaneshiro was tied for 71st after a 23-over 94. Hilo sophomore RJ O’Dell-Lambeth shot a 28-over 99 to tie for 81st, tied with Waiakea sophomore Lucas Yamanaka.
Kamehameha freshman Adam Perry was tied for 85th after a 31-over 102. Waiakea junior Mike Lopez was tied for 88th after a 33-over 104. Kamehameha junior Michael Perry was tied for 91st after a 34-over 105, tied with Kealakehe freshman Tristin Laflamme. Hilo freshman Aidan Puleo was in 93rd place after a 35-over 106. Kamehameha senior Luke Hellikuli was 95th after a 66-over 137.
Maui Prep is in first with a 292 total. Waiakea is in sixth with a 337 total, and Hilo is 10th with a 379 total.
The tournament concludes on Tuesday.
