Construction will take place on four East Hawaii roads over the next three months as crews repair lingering damage from Hurricane Lane.
According to an announcement from the county Department of Public Works, construction will begin, Monday, April 25, and is expected to continue for about three months, assuming optimal weather conditions.
Roads that will be affected include Waianuenue Avenue near the Wailuku River Falls, the Old Mamalahoa Highway near the Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden — formerly the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens — Moho Road in Hawaiian Acres midway between Roads B and C, and the intersection of Kaawale and Haumalu streets in Mountain View.
Work will include repairs to the roadways and shoulders, drainage repairs, repainting, guardrail improvements and more. Drivers should expect lane closures and delays near the construction sites.
The projects are being funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency as disaster relief projects related to Hurricane Lane. That storm, which struck the island August 2018, was the wettest storm on record and damaged or destroyed nearly 160 structures on the Big Island.
According to FEMA, more than $17 million in federal public assistance grants was awarded to the state in response to the hurricane.
