Police arrest 22 for DUI

During the week of April 4-10, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for DUI. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; South Hilo, eight; Puna, three; and South Kohala, two.

So far this year, there have been 308 DUI arrests compared to 349 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.8%.

There have been 197 major accidents so far this year compared to 223 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.7%.

To date, there were have been 12 official traffic fatalities compared to eight for the same time last year, an increase of 50%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
