It was a cleaner performance all-around for Hilo High’s softball team
Quinn Waiki homered Tuesday as half of Hilo’s eight hits went for extra bases, Hauoli Kalipi went the distance in the circle, and the Vikings took what Waiakea gave them in a 16-8 BIIF softball victory at the Warriors’ field.
Hilo (2-1) coaxed 10 walks and was hit five times by three Warriors pitchers, setting the tone with a five-run first inning that was backed by just one hit. Hilo also scored five times in the fifth to lead 13-4.
Kalipi allowed 14 hits, including Kaylee Aiona’s home run, but was backed by a defense that didn’t commit an error. She walked four and struck out three in throwing 119 pitches.
At the plate, Kalipi doubled and was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Waiki drove in two runs and scored four times, and Kiana Agpalza and Lei Soller each finished with two runs and two RBIs. Hope Barclay walked three times and scored two runs.
The Warriors (1-2) were charged with two errors, leading to six unearned runs.
Waiakea amassed an offensive but lost a high-scoring affair for the second consecutive game despite eight extra base-hits. Aiona’s homer was the junior’s second, and Madisen Kodani, Tehani Chinen, Jhayda Turner, Kamaile Pakani-Flores and Korri Fernandez also finished with two hits apiece. Fernandez tripled and Chinen doubled twice.
Freshman Kaitlyn Miura started and pitched one-third of an inning before being relieved by Brianne Felipe. Felipe allowed just one hit in four innings, striking out five, walking eight and allowing eight runs, six earned.
Both teams were coming off losses to Kealakehe (2-0). Hilo fell 6-2 on Saturday in Kailua-Kona, while the Waveriders beat the Warriors 15-10 on March 14.
Pahoa 21, Kohala 6, four innings: Jaylynn Kaawaloa-Alidon stroked a double and a triple in a three-hit game and scored four runs, and Jezney Chang was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs scored as the host Daggers won their opener.
Kawena Alatini pitched four innings in victory, allowing two hits and three earned runs with seven walks and a strikeouts.
The Daggers finished with seven hits and drew 12 walks.
Kohala pitchers were hurt by four fielding errors.
Sydnie Marquez faced five batters without recording an out and Ayezha Isabel went the rest of the way as the Cowgirls fell to 0-2.
