Two men in custody after stabbing in Puna

Police say two men are in custody in connection with a stabbing in Puna late Tuesday night.

Officers responded shortly after 11 p.m., to a report of a stabbing at a residence on 38th Avenue in Orchidland Estates subdivision.

The victim, a 24-year-old man, told police he had been stabbed multiple times during an altercation with the two suspects the victim said came to his home to confront him and who left after stabbing him. The man was taken by ambulance to the Hilo Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He was admitted and later upgraded to stable condition.

Police arrested the two suspects at a residence on Shell Road in Nanawale Estate shortly after 10:30 a.m. today. Albert Kealoha Mahi Jr., 45, was booked on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder and 47-year-old Vincenso Giovanni Gilbert was booked on suspicion of first-degree burglary. Both men were also arrested on outstanding warrants, police said.

After his arrest, Mahi was taken to Hilo Medical Center for treatment of multiple stab wounds and a head injury. He was later released from the hospital.

Both men remain in police custody as the investigation continues.
