The county Department of Public Works has awarded the final contract for the completion of the four-year Kalanianaole Avenue reconstruction project.
Earlier this month, Nan Inc. was awarded an $11.6 million contract to complete the remainder of the work on Kalanianaole, which is the only road in and out of Keaukaha.
Before Nan Inc. can get started, Hawaiian Telcom will be working on installing an underground cable until April 22.
Work is taking place between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting.
The work zone begins when leaving the intersection of Kamehameha Avenue and Kanoelehua Avenue and ends with the portion of Kalanianaole that has been previously closed for improvements.
There will not be additional lane closures or lengthening of the existing closure for the installation.
Hawaiian Telcom says their work will take about four to six weeks to complete, after which Nan Inc. will provide Public Works with a detailed construction schedule, according to Sherise Kana‘e-Kane, Public Works information and education specialist.
Nan Inc. will complete all the remaining tasks for the Kalanianaole reconstruction project, which include drainage improvements and final paving.
The county terminated its contract with the previous contractor on the project, Goodfellow Bros., in early December after months of only intermittent work on the road.
In the interim, the county used its emergency procurement to award contractor Jas W. Glover Ltd. a $930,000 contract to maintain the construction site, including filling potholes, repainting road stripes and more.
According to Public Works Deputy Director Stephen Pause, the project will be completed by December.
