A 44-year-old Hilo woman who was free on court-supervised release without monetary bail for two prior burglaries was arrested Friday for a third burglary.
Jerrylene Kanakanui was charged with first-degree burglary for allegedly breaking into a home on Alu Street in the Waiakea Uka neighborhood of Hilo, according to county Prosecutor Kelden Waltjen.
Prosecutors set her bail at $25,000.
On Feb. 7, Kanakanui was granted court-supervised release without cash bail by Kona District Judge Kimberly Taniyama over the objection of prosecutors for the first-degree burglary of a West Hawaii residence, according to court records.
Kanakanui has a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 4 in that case.
In addition, Kanakanui has a pending case in Hilo Circuit Court for first-degree burglary and unauthorized control of a stolen vehicle in an incident that, according to court records, took place sometime between Oct. 8 and Oct. 16.
A motion to suspend Kanakanui’s supervised release in that case was filed Feb. 8, court records indicate.
At Kanakanui’s initial court appearance Monday for the most-recent burglary charge, Stanton Oshiro, her court-appointed defense attorney, requested she again be released under court supervision without any cash bail.
Deputy Prosecutor Andrew Son objected to Oshiro’s motion.
Hilo District Judge Jeffrey Hawk denied the motion, maintained Kanakanui’s bail at $25,000, and ordered her to return at 2 p.m. Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.
Kanakanui remains in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
