Tevin Atwal netted three goals Wednesday and Tobias Johnson added two as Waiakea began its delayed Division I title defense with a 9-0 victory against Konawaena at Ken Yamase Memorial Stadium.
Ayden Araki, Rogelito Doratt, Kamalei Chandler and Austin Mohica each scored one goal as Waiakea led 7-0 at halftime and ended the match via the BIIF’s mercy rule in the 54th minute.
Kawena Calles and Kainalu Mattos saw time in goalkeeper in blanking the Wildcats (0-3), who have been outscored 27-0 this season.
Atwal and Johnson received playing time as freshman in 2020, when the Warriors went on to beat Hilo in overtime in the BIIF final, ending their 14-year title drought. The Warriors and Vikings are scheduled to play Friday at Ken Yamase Memorial Stadium.
Girls basketball
Kamehameha 44, Keaau 35: Sarah Schubert scored 24 points and Keanu Huihui added 18 as the Warriors used a big second quarter to pull away at Koaia Gym, improving to 2-0.
Jezadette Gonzalez and Olivia Yasutake each scored 10 points for the Cougars, who were outscored 16-3 in the second and trailed 29-14 at the half.
Hilo 56, Ka’u 1: Keirstyn Agonias delivered 16 points, Veda Galima scored 13 and the host Vikings (3-0) limited the Trojans (0-4) to Katrina Manantan’s free throw in the second quarter.
Ayana Meyer added 11 points for Hilo.
