Prepare for Catapalooza!

To alleviate the ever-growing cat population in its shelters, the Hawaii Island Humane Society is hosting a cat adoption event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Cat lovers can adopt healthy cats and kittens for a discounted fee of $50 each, and those interested also have the option of adopting two kittens for $75.

“We have a lot of cats in our population and many kittens that are growing up in the shelter,” HIHS CEO Lauren Nickerson said. “What we want to see is kittens grow up in homes.”

Prospective adopters interested in attending the event must submit an adoption application in advance, with the deadline at 3 p.m. Friday.

There will be about 50 cats and kittens available for adoption with approximately 42 cats available at the Animal Community Center in Kona and the rest at the Keaau shelter.

“We are encouraging people to come to our Kona shelter, because we have so many sweet cats and kittens in our cat barn,” Nickerson said. “All of these cats are super social, they love people and toys, and will be a great addition to a home.”

All cats and kittens have been spayed, neutered, microchipped and checked for feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukemia virus. They are also up to date on monthly prevention, deworming and vaccines.

“Some of these cats have been in our care for about six months, so these guys are ready to go home,” Nickerson said. “People approved for adoption can spend as much time with the cats as they wish during the event and bring a cat home with them that day.”

Nickerson is also hoping that people interested in kittens consider getting two from the shelter.

“There are so many benefits to getting two kittens at the same time,” Nickerson said. “Not only does it give space to more cats, they also will learn together, play together and keep each other entertained.”
